Fuji Xerox to Close Printer Plant in Central Japan
June 14, 2018
Tokyo- Fuji Xerox Co. will close its printer plant in Kashiwazaki in the central Japan prefecture of Niigata at the end of March 2019, according to informed sources.
The closure is part of a reconstruction plan announced by the Tokyo-based printer maker's parent, Fujifilm Holdings Corp., in late January, which includes a reduction of some 10,000 employees, the sources said Wednesday.
It is the first plant closure to be implement under the restructuring plan.
Fuji Xerox has already notified local parties concerned about the closure.
The Niigata plant to be shut down is operated by Fuji Xerox Manufacturing Co., an office equipment manufacturing subsidiary of Fuji Xerox based in Ebina, Kanagawa Prefecture, south of Tokyo.
The operations of the plant, which manufactures large printers for brochures and leaflets, will be transferred to the parent company's plant in Ebina.
Of the Niigata plant's workforce of about 420, some 260 regular workers will move to the Ebina plant and other bases. Meanwhile, the contracts for around 160 nonregular workers will not be renewed.
No decision has been made about the fate of Fuji Xerox's other production bases in Japan, the sources said. Jiji Press
