Tokyo- The average mileage of gasoline vehicles in Japan has improved about 12 pct over the last seven years, thanks to technological innovations such as higher combustion efficiency and lighter vehicle bodies, a transport ministry survey recently revealed.
The growing presence of hybrid vehicles also contributed to the better fuel economy.
The average gasoline mileage stood at an estimated 12.0 kilometers per liter in fiscal 2017, up from 10.7 kilometers in fiscal 2010.
In the fiscal 2017 survey, about 9,600 automobile owners were asked each month about distances traveled and fuel consumption.
By type of passenger cars, the average mileage rose to 16.5 kilometers from 16.3 kilometers among hybrid cars, to 14.1 kilometers from 12.6 kilometers among minicars, with engine displacements of up to 660 cc.
The mileage increased to 11.9 kilometers from 11.3 kilometers among small-sized cars with engine displacements of up to 2,000 cc and to 9.0 kilometers from 8.3 kilometers among larger models.
Average gasoline mileage is likely to improve further, given recently launched hybrid and minivehicle models with catalog mileage figures of over 40 kilometers and 30 kilometers, respectively.
At the same time, electric vehicles are expected to attract increasing demand. Jiji Press
