GMA Network first half income down 21%

GMA Network Inc. on Tuesday said net income fell by  21 percent in the first half of the year,

The network posted a net income of P1.23 billion in the January to June period from 1.55 billion in the same period last year.

In the second quarter,  GMA’s net income amounted to P805.68 million, higher from P710.31 million in the same period last year.

GMA revenues dropped by 6 percent to P7.24 billion  from P7.69 billon last year.

Consolidated airtime sales comprised 88 percent of total revenues and sealed at P6.39 billion, down  7 percent  from last year’s P6.86 billion.

" This year saw a notable contraction in television placements from advertisers, which was felt across the broadcasting industry,” GMA said

Mixed results were seen among airtime-revenue generating platforms, with radio and regional TV operations managing to pull ahead in their topline year-on-year, while Channel 7 and GNTV-11 had lukewarm sales in between periods.

GMA said it kept its lead in nationwide urban TV ratings in the second quarter, posting an average people audience share of 40.4 percent versus ABS-CBN’s 38.3 percent based on the official data from the industry’s widely-trusted ratings service provider Nielsen TV Audience Measurement.

In Mega Manila, GMA’s 46.5 percent people audience share average topped ABS-CBN’s 30.1 percent by a wider lead.

GMA similarly posted a double-digit margin over ABS-CBN in TV people audience share in urban Kuzon which has been the bailiwick of GMA. DMS
