Japan Govt Workers Receive Winter Bonuses

December 10, 2018

Tokyo--Japanese central government workers in nonmanagerial posts on Monday received winter bonuses of some 710,000 yen on average, down about 4,400 yen from a year before.

Their average age stands at 35.5 years.

The National Personnel Authority had recommended a bonus increase equivalent to 0.05 month of monthly salary. But the overall average declined due to a fall in government workers' average age.

Among top government officials, Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and Supreme Court Chief Justice Naoto Otani each received 6.03 million yen.

Winter bonuses averaged 4.40 million yen for other cabinet ministers and 3.43 million yen for administrative vice ministers.

The cabinet ministers, including Abe, will voluntarily return part of their bonuses in order to promote administrative and fiscal reforms.

About 5.59 million yen each was paid to Tadamori Oshima, speaker of the House of Representatives, the lower chamber of the Diet, Japan's parliament, and Chuichi Date, president of the House of Councillors, the upper chamber. Jiji Press
