Kobe Beef Fetches Record High Price in Japan
May 29, 2018
Kobe- Kobe beef sold for a record high of 8,024 yen per kilogram in an auction on Monday at the wholesale market in Kobe, Hyogo Prefecture, western Japan, reflecting the brand's rising popularity.
The beef was sold to a local trader.
Exports of Kobe beef have been growing. In addition, an increasing number of visitors to Japan have been asking for the brand at restaurants.
The high price also comes as food businesses have been expanding stocks of frozen Kobe beef to secure such meat for holiday periods and the 2020 Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games, industry sources said.
Kobe beef prices "will possibly reach a new record high going into the summer holidays," an official of the auction's operator said. Jiji Press
