Mizuho Restarts ATMs after Data Transfer to New System

June 11, 2018

Tokyo- Japan's Mizuho Financial Group Inc. restarted on Monday morning its automated teller machines and other services after a suspension to transfer customer data of its banking units to a new computer system.

The transfer was part of the group's process of unifying its current systems taken over from former Dai-Ichi Kangyo Bank, former Industrial Bank of Japan and former Yasuda Trust and Banking Co., all of which were integrated into the Mizuho group.

The megabank group aims to complete the system integration work in April-September 2019.

According to Mizuho Bank, no problems in operations or system glitches had been reported as of 11 a.m. (2 a.m. GMT).

Mizuho Bank, a core unit of Mizuho Financial, called on depositors to take time before using its services, as it expects heavy traffic for its online banking services and long lines of customers in front of its ATMs.

The group will spend about a year to complete the system integration, after suffering two massive system failures in the past. The first glitch came when it realigned bank units in April 2002 and the second after the March 2011 powerful earthquake and tsunami that mainly hit the Tohoku northeastern region.

Using weekends, the Mizuho group plans to transfer data in a total of nine batches to unify the systems, and the first one started Saturday night. The next transfer work will begin at midnight on July 13. Jiji Press
