Nikon to Return to Mirrorless Camera Market

August 24, 2018

Tokyo- Nikon Corp. said Thursday that it will release two new models of full-frame mirrorless cameras equipped with a full-size sensor, marking the Japanese company's comeback to the market.

Nikon released entry-level and midrange mirrorless cameras in 2011, but it halted their production last year due to weak demand.

The new models, Nikon Z7 and Z6, have 45.75 and 24.5 effective megapixels, respectively. The Z series feature an inner diameter of 55 millimeters, one of the industry's largest lens mounts.

The camera body of the Z7 is expected to cost around 440,000 yen and the Z6 some 270,000 yen. They will be put on sale starting late next month.

"We have poured our finest optical technology (into the new products) while looking ahead to the future of visual expression," Nikon President Kazuo Ushida said at a press conference.
