July 31, 2018
Cordoba, Argentina- Japan's Nissan Motor Co. started production of small trucks in Cordoba, central Argentina, on Monday.
This is the first time that Nissan has owned a plant in Argentina.
The automaker regards the plant as its key production base for pickup trucks in the South American country. It plans to produce up to 70,000 units of small trucks a year at the plant, including the Frontier pickup.
Nissan invested 600 million dollars to introduce a dedicated production line in the Santa Isabel plant of Renault SA in Cordoba. Renault is an alliance partner of Nissan.
As well as small trucks under the Nissan brand, trucks for shipments to Renault and Germany's Daimler AG are expected to be manufactured on the production line.
Half of the trucks produced will be supplied to the Argentine market, with the rest exported to Brazil and other destinations.
Production in Argentina will give Nissan a growth opportunity in Central and South America, Nissan President Hiroto Saikawa told a ceremony to mark the start of production.
Vehicle production by Nissan and Renault shows trust in workers in Argentina, Argentine President Mauricio Macri told the ceremony.
In Central and South America, Nissan has plants in Mexico and Brazil as well. Jiji Press
