Nissan Submits Investigative Report on Emission Data Fabrication

Tokyo- Nissan Motor Co. reported to the transport ministry Wednesday the results of its investigation into manipulation of vehicle emission test data and measures to prevent similar misconduct in the future.

The ministry had requested Nissan to submit the report in a month after the automaker revealed the irregularities in July. But the company missed the deadline.

Handing the report to Road Transport Bureau Director-General Tetsuya Okuda at the ministry, Nissan President and Chief Executive Hiroto Saikawa said, "I deeply apologize for damaging customer trust."

According to Nissan, emission data were fabricated and invalid data were adopted as valid ones at its mainstay Oppama plant in Yokosuka, Kanagawa Prefecture, and four other domestic factories. The irregularities affected 1,171 vehicles.

The data scandal followed the revelation in last autumn of new vehicle inspections conducted by unqualified workers.

Nissan Chief Competitive Officer Yasuhiro Yamauchi, the company's manufacturing chief, is scheduled to explain details of the report at a press conference at Nissan's head office in Yokohama, the capital of Kanagawa, later in the day. Jiji Press
