Peso surges to P53.70 vs US dollar

The peso surged to a 24-centavo gain against the US dollar on Friday, and the main share index finished slightly higher.
The peso closed at P53.70 from P53.94 on Thursday. Volume was a hefty $905.02 million from $729.25 million.
The Philippine Stock Exchange index rose 10.27 points to 7,151.27. In the broader market, there were 92 gainers, 88 decliners and 48 unchanged.
Volume reached 2.16 million shares worth P4.94 billion from Thursday's 457.65 million shares valued at P4.02 billion.
Most traded shares were led by Universal Robina Corp., down 0.41 percent to P145.90; Meralco, down 1.64 percent to P346.80; Semirara Mining and Power, up 5.73 percent to P29.50 and BDO, up 1.18 percent to P119.80. DMS
