PSE lower, Merry Mart gains on first day of trading

The Philippine Stock Exchange (PSE) index closed lower on Monday even as Merry Mart Consumer Corp marked its first day of trading.
The peso finished at P50.345 against the US dollar from Thursday's P50.195. Volume reached $791.9 million from Thursday's $974.24 million at the foreign exchange portal of the Bankers Association of the Philippines.
The PSE index closed at 6,163.62 points, down 312.43. In the broader market, there were 178 losers, 39 gainers and 29 unchanged.
Merry Mart, which opened at P1.00, finished at P1.50. It was the fourth most active stock, with volume of 250,666,000 worth P369, 967, 090.
Volume reached 1.01 billion shares worth P7.76 billion from Thursday's 1.87 billion shares valued at P7.04 billion.
Most active shares were led by Ayala Land, down P1.60 to P35.80; BDO, down P6 to P99 and Emperador, Inc, down 42 centavos to P7.90. DMS
