Sharp to Release Smartphone with Japan-Made OLED Display

October 4, 2018

Tokyo- Sharp Corp. said Wednesday that it will release by the end of this year a new smartphone, Aquos zero, with an organic light-emitting diode display, also manufactured by the Japanese electronics maker.

According to Sharp, it will be the first time for such a Japan-made display to be used for a smartphone.

More and more high-end smartphones, including Apple Inc.'s iPhone, are adopting OLED displays, which are lighter than liquid crystal displays and vividly show contrasts between light and dark.

Japanese makers of OLED displays, however, have fallen behind in cost competition and development, and the market is led by foreign makers such as South Korea's Samsung Electronics Co.

Shigeru Kobayashi, head of the personal communications business division at Sharp, told a press conference that the company hopes to enhance its brand equity in Japan so that the new smartphone will be the first choice among smartphones using Google Inc.'s Android operating system. Jiji Press
