Sony Ships More than 10,000 New Aibo Robot Dogs
May 8, 2018
Tokyo- Sony Corp.'s shipments of the fully remodeled "Aibo" robot dog topped 10,000 units in three months since its debut in mid-January, the company has said.
A total of 11,111 Aibos had been shipped as of mid-April, Sony said.
It was the first time for Sony to disclose the new robot pet's shipment figure.
Given the popularity, the Japanese electronics and entertainment giant will expand Aibo production, it said.
The successor to the first-generation Aibo, produced between 1999 and 2006, comes with artificial intelligence and a cloud communications function to allow each unit to develop unique behavioral patterns depending on how the owner treats the robot pet.
Sony sells the new Aibo only online for about 300,000 yen per unit, including three-year fees for cloud services necessary for the robot dog to grow up. Jiji Press
