Stock index tops 8,000 points, but closes lower

Stocks briefly hit new highs on Friday but the Philippine Stock Exchange index settled below 8,000 points. The index finished at 7,990.24 points, up 31.61. It was at 8,001.70 points after it gained 43.07 points an hour and a half before trading ended at 3:30 pm. In the broader market, there were 96 gainers, 85 decliners and 54 unchanged. Volume reached 1.47 billion shares worth P8.11 billion. Most active shares were led by Ayala Land Inc whose price was unchanged at P41.90 but which drew value turnover of P640.7 million. International Container Terminal Services closed 1.75 percent higher to P105.80 and DMCI Holdings ended 2.11 percent higher to P14.50. There will be no trading on Monday, June 12. The peso closed at P49.50 from the previous day's P49.495 against the US dollar. Volume rose to $609.2 million from $374.7 million. DMS
