Stock index up 1.6%, peso at P53.07:$1

The Philippine Stock Exchange regained the previous day's losses as the main index ended 1.6 percent higher on Wednesday.
The Philippine Stock Exchange index finished at 7,851.46 as the market awaited the policy-setting meeting of the Monetary Board on Thursday.
The peso closed at P53.07 against the US dollar from P53 on Tuesday. Volume at the foreign exchange market reached 721.15 million from the previous day's $681.5 million.
In the broader market, there were 116 gainers, 75 decliners and 52 shares unchanged.
Volume reached 1.25 billion shares worth P8.6 billion from Tuesday's 1.79 billion valued at P5.2 billion.
Most active shares were led by SM Prime, up 2.9 percent to P39; Globe Telecom, up 8.64 percent to P2,024 and PXP Energy Corp., up 3.66 percent to P15.20. DMS
