Stocks end February lower

Stocks closed lower on Wednesday, the final trading month of February with the Philippine Stock Exchange index finishing below 8,500 points.

The index lost 117.09 points to settle at 8,475.29. In the broader market, there were 111 gainers, 96 decliners and 52 shares unchanged.

Volume rose to 16.9 billion shares worth P9.97 billion from Tuesday's 3.66 billion valued at P9.25 billion. Foreigners remained net sellers, unloading P5.4 billion, while buying P4.47 billion.

Most traded shares were led by Ayala Land, down 3.29 percent to P41.10; MRC Allied, up 17.39 percent to 81 centavos, SM Investment Corp., down 3.09 percent to P940 and PXP Energy Corp., up 1.89 percent to P18.34.

The peso closed at P52.10 against the US dollar from P52.03. Volume at the Philippine Dealing System reached $652.10 million from $648.70 million. DMS
