Stocks lower, peso nears P50 to the dollar

Stocks ended lower on Thursday, the last day of a shortened trading month. The Philippine Stock Exchange closed 65.44 points lower to end at 7,661.01. At the broader market, there were 172 decliners and 72 gainers with 62 issues unchanged. Volume turnover reached 1.62 billion shares valued at P5.76 billion. Foreigners were net sellers at P145.97 million. Losers were led by Liberty Flour Mills, down 44.39 percent to P36.20 and Bogo-Medellin, down 15.31 percent to P96.55 Most active shares were led by Cemex, down 5.66 percent to P7.34 and Globe Telecom, down 3.55 percent to P.2,078. The peso inched closer to P50 to one dollar as it closed at P49.95 from Wednesday’s P49.78. Volume reached $787.9 million from the previous session’s $620.4 million at the Philippine Dealing System.
