Subaru to Launch Fully Remodeled Forester in July

June 20, 2018

Tokyo- Japan's Subaru Corp. said Wednesday that it will launch a new Forester sport-utility vehicle on July 19, in the first full model change in five and a half years.

Subaru will release a new vehicle for the first time since a string of scandals, including vehicle inspections by unqualified workers, came to light last autumn.

Amid concerns over a loss of customers following the scandals, the automaker hopes to stage a recovery through the release of its most popular SUV model in the world with an enhanced security system.

As a standard feature, the new Forester is equipped with EyeSight, an advanced driving assistance system that allows it to automatically follow the vehicle in front on expressways through the control of the accelerator and steering wheel.

The 2,500 cc Forester will start at 2,808,000 yen.

Subaru will also release a 2,000 cc hybrid version priced at 3,099,600 yen on Sept. 14.

The hybrid model is equipped with a facial recognition system that warns drivers if they nod off at the wheel or look to the side. It also automatically adjusts seats and side mirrors to preset positions.

The monthly domestic sales target for the new Forester is 2,500 units.

"We aim to regain the trust of our customers as a brand that offers safety and fun," Executive Vice President Tomomi Nakamura said at a press conference. "With the new product, we will take a new step toward our goal," added Nakamura, who is slated to be Subaru's next president. Jiji Press
