Tokyo ranked third in Global Attractiveness Rankings

November 19, 2019

Tokyo--Tokyo was ranked third among 48 major cities in the world in terms of their ability to attract people, capital and companies, a Japanese think tank said Tuesday.

London topped the annual Global Power City Index rankings of the Mori Memorial Foundation's Institute for Urban Strategies, followed by New York.

Tokyo was in third place for the fourth straight year, but its total score fell from a year before, widening the gap with New York. Paris, in fourth place, made up ground on Tokyo.

The Japanese capital was rated lower in four categories--the economy, research and development, livability and accessibility.

In the economy category, ratings on Tokyo's stock market capitalization and gross domestic product growth rate were lower.

Among the top four cities, Tokyo's weakness was highlighted in the number of luxury hotel rooms, nightlife options and overseas cities to which it has direct flights.

Tokyo "needs to develop more attractive tourism resources" ahead of the 2020 Olympics and Paralympics in the Japanese capital, the institute said. Jiji Press
