1,600 Remain in Shelters after Osaka Quake

Osaka- About 1,600 people remained in shelters in Osaka and Kyoto prefectures Wednesday morning following a major earthquake that struck the western Japan region on Monday.

The Japan Meteorological Agency issued heavy rain warnings mainly for northern Osaka.

According to the agency, rainfall of up to 150 millimeters is forecast in Osaka in the 24 hours through 6 a.m. Thursday (9 p.m. Wednesday GMT).

Evacuation advisories and instructions were issued in part of Minoo and Takatsuki as well as other areas of Osaka for fear of landslides.

The death toll from the quake stood at five as of 7 p.m. Tuesday, while 408 people were injured and 515 buildings were damaged, according to the Fire and Disaster Management Agency.

Railway and other traffic disruptions caused by the quake have been generally resolved, with Osaka Monorail Co. resuming its train services between Osaka Airport and Bampaku-kinen-koen stations on Wednesday morning.

The 6.1-magnitude quake registered up to lower 6 in northern Osaka, the third highest level on the country's seismic intensity scale. Jiji Press
