September 19, 2018
Tokyo- The 2020 Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic organizing committee adopted a plan on Tuesday to offer volunteers 1,000 yen per person a day as transportation expenses.
The committee will start accepting applications from Sept. 26 for a total of 80,000 volunteers for the quadrennial events.
It is considering paying the transportation allowance in the form of prepaid cards with special designs, people familiar with the matter said.
Atsushi Seike, who heads a volunteer review panel of the committee, said the allowance was set at 1,000 yen to "achieve a balance between budget constraints and (volunteers') convenience."
Volunteers for the 2020 Games will be provided with uniforms, insurance and meals. But they will be asked to pay accommodation fees.
The committee will let applicants to pick by a vote later this year the nickname of the volunteers from ideas submitted chiefly by advertising agencies. Jiji Press
