2,722 Heatstroke Sufferers Taken to Hospital in Japan Last Week
July 10, 2018
Tokyo- The number of people taken to hospital due to heatstroke in Japan fell to 2,722 in the week ended Sunday from 3,473 the previous week, the Fire and Disaster Management Agency said Tuesday.
The drop was apparently because there were many rainy days.
Of the total, three have died, one each in Yamagata, Saitama and Niigata prefectures.
People aged 65 or over accounted for 56.1 pct of all those taken to hospital.
By prefecture, Tokyo saw the largest figure, with 271 people, followed by Saitama, with 256, and Osaka, with 154.
The agency called on people to take regular breaks and keep hydrated as temperatures are expected to rise over the next week.
It especially urged caution for those who stay outdoors for a long time to remove debris and doing other work in western areas hit by torrential rain. Jiji Press
