May 8, 2019
Tokyo--A total of 342 people were taken to hospital due to heatstroke in Japan in the week to Sunday, the Fire and Disaster Management Agency said Wednesday.
No one died from heatstroke during the week, according to this year's first tally of sufferers of the disease.
Among those taken to hospital, people aged 65 or over accounted for 158, or 46.2 pct of the total.
Of the total heatstroke sufferers, three were in serious condition, needing to be hospitalized for more than three weeks.
By prefecture, Fukuoka had the largest number of heatstroke sufferers taken to hospital, with 22, followed by Tokyo, with 21, and Saitama, with 20.
As days with severe heat are expected to increase, the agency is calling on people to take frequent breaks and stay well hydrated. Jiji Press
