Tokyo- A total of 38 people died of heatstroke in Tokyo's 23 wards in the first 22 days of this month, compared with 20 in the same period of July last year, it was learned Monday.

Of the 38, who were in their 40s to 90s, 35 died indoors, according to officials of the Tokyo metropolitan government's medical examiners' office.

Sixteen of the total died between 5 p.m. and 5 a.m., and 12 between 5 a.m. and 5 p.m., while the time of deaths was unknown for the other 10, the officials said.

Most of the indoor heatstroke deaths occurred in rooms where air conditioners were turned off or without them.

The office called on people to use air conditioners appropriately as hot days are continuing. Jiji Press
