58 Local Govts in Japan to Tap Internal Funds
March 4, 2018
Tokyo- A total of 58 prefectural and city governments in Japan plan to use their internal funds in fiscal 2018 to cover at least 268.4 billion yen in costs for disaster management and measures against aging public facilities, a Jiji Press tally found Saturday.
The sum includes 236.2 billion yen by 26 prefectures, including 187.7 billion yen by the Tokyo metropolitan government. The remaining 32.2 billion yen involve 32 major cities.
These local governments plan to use the funds for projects to make public offices, schools, roads and dikes quake-resistant and give them longer lives, as well as those for disaster prevention.
Projects in Tokyo include road improvement aimed at preventing fire from spreading in areas with a large number of wooden houses and the elimination of power poles. Jiji Press
