6 major countries, plus Japan, vow to implement Paris pact without US

June 13, 2017

BOLOGNA, ITALY- Environment ministers of the Group of Seven major industrialized countries ended their two-day meeting in Italy Monday, with six countries, other than the United States, reaffirming a policy of implementing the 2015 Paris climate accord. The ministers of Britain, Canada, France, Germany, Italy and Japan as well as the European Union "reaffirm strong commitment to the swift and effective implementation of the Paris Agreement," a joint statement said.

During the meeting, officials of the six countries tried to persuade Scott Pruitt, administrator of the US Environmental Protection Agency, to cancel a decision by the administration of President Donald Trump to leave the Paris accord, sources familiar with the situations said.
But the six countries failed in the attempt. The United States did not endorse the commitment to the Paris pact in the statement.
Still, the six showed some consideration by referring to the US position on the issue in a footnote.
Regarding US efforts to address climate change, the footnote said, "The United States will continue to engage with key international partners in a manner that is consistent with our domestic priorities, preserving both a strong economy and a healthy environment."
The joint statement said the six countries "welcome the continued support" for the Paris accord from other countries as well as subnational and other actors around the world.
The six also agreed that "the Paris agreement is irreversible and its full integrity is key for the security and prosperity of our planet, societies and economies." (Jiji Press)
