6 People Die in Motorcycle Accident in Nara

Nara- Six people died, including at least four teenage boys, and two teenage girls were severely injured in an accident involving three motorcycles in Nara, western Japan, early on Friday, police said.

Each of the bikes is believed to have been carrying two or three of the eight people, said sources familiar with the investigation by the Nara prefectural police department.

At around 2:20 a.m. (5:20 p.m. Thursday GMT), the police received an emergency call from a truck driver who saw crashed bikes on a bridge on National Route 24 over the Saho River, about 2.3 kilometers southwest of Nara Station of West Japan Railway Co. or JR West.

The driver told the police that some bikes passed the truck when it was stopping for a red light, and that the driver found the crashed bikes as the truck moved forward after the light turned green.

Of the victims, the four boys were 17 or 18 years old and residents of the city. The two others, a man and a woman, have not been identified. The injured girls are 14 and 17.

The prefectural police are investigating the case for possible charges of negligent driving in death and injury, the sources said. Jiji Press
