June 19, 2017
Tokyo- All seven crew members of the USS Fitzgerald who went missing after the Aegis destroyer collided with a container ship off central Japan on Saturday have been confirmed dead, the US Navy in Japan said Monday.
According to the Navy, the seven were sailors aged between 19 and 37, including Dakota Kyle Rigsby, a 19-year-old seaman from Virginia.
Their bodies were found in flooded compartment areas of the 8,315-ton USS Fitzgerald, which suffered damage from the collision with the Philippine-registered container ship, the 29,060-ton ACX Crystal.
The US Navy found their bodies and ended its search for the missing crew members on Sunday, but at the time withheld the number of victims before giving notice to their families. (Jiji Press)
