70 % of Japan local govts have climate adaptation plans
June 18, 2017
Tokyo- Over 70 pct of all prefectures and major cities in Japan have adaptation plans to minimize the negative effects of global warming, a Jiji Press survey showed on Saturday. In the survey, conducted between May and June, 34 of the 47 prefectures and 14 of the 20 ordinance-designated major cities said they have compiled such plans. In November 2015, the national government adopted a climate adaptation plan including measures to cope with a possible rise in the frequency of heavy rains and a fall in the quality of farm goods. Local governments are not obliged to draw up their own climate adaptation plans. But 15 prefectures and major cities had done so even before the central government's adoption of its plan. Since then, 33 prefectures and cities have set adaptation plans, representing major progress in efforts at the local government level over one and a half year. (Jiji Press)
