Abe Arrives in Washington for Talks with Trump ahead of U.S.-N. Korea Summit
June 7, 2018
Washington- Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe arrived at Andrews Air Force Base near Washington on Wednesday to hold talks with U.S. President Donald Trump.
During the meeting at the White House on Thursday, Abe and Trump are expected to reaffirm their cooperation in denuclearizing North Korea, ahead of the first-ever U.S.-North Korea summit, scheduled to take place in Singapore on Tuesday.
Abe also plans to seek Trump's support for resolving the issue of Pyongyang's abductions of Japanese citizens, Japanese officials said.
Among other topics at the Abe-Trump meeting would be bilateral trade.
Now that the Trump administration has slapped fresh tariffs on steel and aluminum imports from Japan and threatened to impose a high levy on passenger cars from the Asian trade partner, Abe intends to ask the president to reconsider his protectionist moves, the officials said. Jiji Press
