TOKYO- Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe left Tokyo International Airport at Haneda on Monday for New York, mainly to attend the ongoing UN General Assembly session.
Abe hopes to agree with leaders of other countries on the need to further strengthen international pressure on North Korea, which has performed provocative acts including the launches of ballistic missiles over Japan.
"The solidarity of the international community is being tested by repeated dangerous provocations by North Korea that pose a threat to world peace," Abe told reporters before his departure. "I want to underscore this (during the trip)."
Abe also said he will urge other countries to implement strictly the new UN Security Council sanctions resolution against North Korea, including a cap on oil supplies to the communist country. During his stay, he will hold a three-way meeting with US. President Donald Trump and South Korean President Moon Jae-in to confirm cooperation to deal with North Korea. He also plans to meet with other leaders.
On Wednesday, Abe will deliver an address during the UN assembly general debate. He is also slated to give a speech at the New York Stock Exchange to talk about his Abenomics economic policy measures.Jiji Press
