Abe May Visit U.S. for Talks with Trump before G-7 Summit

May 28, 2018

Tokyo- Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe may visit the United States to hold talks with U.S. President Donald Trump before a two-day summit of leaders of the Group of Seven major countries in Canada from June 8, a Japanese government source has said.

The idea is being considered by the Japanese and U.S. governments, the source said Sunday.

Abe initially studied holding a bilateral meeting with Trump on the sidelines of the summit among Britain, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan and the United States.

But some in the Japanese government believe that it would be better for Abe to meet with Trump before the G-7 gathering, given rapid developments in the situation surrounding the June 12 summit between the U.S. president and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in Singapore, which was once canceled but is now apparently being rearranged, the source said.
