June 2, 2018
Otsu, Shiga Pref.- Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe voiced on Saturday his expectations for a summit between U.S. President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, which will be held on June 12.
Speaking at a convention of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party's Shiga prefectural chapter in Otsu, Abe said he is "looking forward to" the summit.
"We will do everything we can to make it a historic meeting where we see progress in (North Korea's) nuclear, missile and abduction issues," he added.
Abe said that Japan does not tolerate North Korea equipping itself with nuclear arms.
"Together with the international community, we have increased pressure (on Pyongyang) with a stance of not allowing loopholes," he said.
Abe is set to meet with Trump in Washington on Thursday, the day before the start of the two-day Group of Seven summit in Canada. Jiji Press
