Akita, Yamaguchi Candidates for Aegis Ashore: Defense Chief
May 15, 2018
Tokyo- The Japanese government is considering a Ground Self-Defense Force facility in Akita Prefecture, northeastern Japan, and another in Yamaguchi Prefecture, western Japan, as candidates for hosting the Aegis Ashore land-based missile defense system, Defense Minister Itsunori Onodera said Tuesday.
Speaking at a press conference, Onodera said the government is making arrangements to brief local government heads on the possible deployment.
The government will consider offering explanations to local residents "through discussions with municipalities," he said.
In December last year, the government decided on the introduction of two Aegis Ashore batteries in a bid to strengthen Japan's capability to intercept ballistic missiles from North Korea.
