ANA aircraft overshoot due to captain’s braking delay: report
February 22, 2018
Tokyo- An All Nippon Airways aircraft skidded off a runway at an airport in the northernmost Japan prefecture of Hokkaido last year due chiefly to the captain's delay in applying the brakes, the Japan Transport Safety Board said in a report Thursday.
The Bombardier DHC-8-402 plane, which was carrying 25 people including crew members, went 72 meters off the runway at New Chitose Airport on Jan. 19, 2017, after landing.
The delayed braking caused the aircraft to run straight ahead despite a ground controller's instruction to make a turn onto a taxiway, according to the report. In the accident, no one was injured.
The captain might have intentionally applied the brakes late to proceed to the taxiway quicker or just made a mistake in judging when to start the braking maneuver, it said, adding that the runway was frozen and covered with snow at the time. Jiji Press
