Armani uniforms for Tokyo schoolchildren meet criticism

February 9, 2018

Tokyo- The decision by a public elementary school in central Tokyo's upscale Ginza district to recommend items from high-end Italian brand Armani for de-facto student uniforms has provoked complaints from some parents.

The Armani clothes proposed by Taimei Elementary School for use beginning with students enrolled in April will cost more than 80,000 yen per set, including optional items such as sweater and socks.

The clothes are not mandatory for students, but the recommendation as desirable school attire effectively designates them as uniforms.

According to the board of education in Chuo Ward, where the school is located, school officials explained that they hope the new uniforms will create an atmosphere suitable for a school in Ginza.

But the decision has drawn protests from some parents. "I can't agree (to the decision)," one said.

The clothing issue was raised at a parliamentary panel meeting on Thursday.

"I think 80,000 yen is expensive," Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Taro Aso said at a House of Representatives Budget Committee session. "It would be a difficult situation if just one student couldn't afford to buy (the clothes)."

Education minister Yoshimasa Hayashi said, "I think the school should have held more discussions with parents before making the decision." Jiji Press
