Australia probing Takata air bag recall after fatal accident

July 24, 2017

SYDNEY- The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission said Monday it is investigating the recall of defective air bags made by Japan's Takata Corp.  after the first fatal accident in the country apparently linked to the safety equipment.
The commission said it is "urgently seeking information" from the Department of Infrastructure and Regional Development and automakers regarding Takata air bags. The department is responsible for motor vehicle standards and is monitoring the recall.
Takata, mired in financial difficulties stemming from global recalls due to defects in its air bag inflators, filed for bankruptcy protection under Japan's civil rehabilitation law last month.
In Australia, more than 2.3 million vehicles installed with Takata air bags have been recalled since 2009.
A man driving a CR-V sport-utility vehicle of Honda Motor Co. died after a traffic accident on July 13.
The fatality is highly likely to be caused by an irregular rupture of a Takata air bag, according to local police. (Jiji Press)
