June 23, 2017
Tokyo- Tokyo's Ueno Zoo said Friday that the baby giant panda born at the zoo last week has been confirmed to be female.
The baby, the first giant panda born at the zoo in about five years, is in good health and her weight has almost doubled since birth, the zoo said.
The cub's third physical examination was held on Thursday, according to Ueno Zoo.
Zoo staffers conducted visual checks on the gender of the cub, together with experts invited from the giant panda conservation research center in China. They sent images to the center for confirmation.
The exam showed that the cub was 17.6 centimeters tall, growing 3.3 centimeters since the baby's first checkup, conducted two days after birth, and weighed 283.9 grams, gaining 136.9 grams, according to the zoo.
The new cub was born on June 12 to giant panda Shin Shin, 11, and her same-age male partner, Ri Ri.
The mother is raising the cub well. She is eating bamboo shoots and leaves to supply nutrients, while continuing to nurse her cub around 10 times a day, the zoo said. (Jiji Press)
