Brazil seeks deeper ties with Japan under new emperor
May 3, 2019
Sao Paulo--Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro on Thursday expressed his wish to see deeper ties between his country and Japan, following the enthronement of Japanese Emperor Naruhito earlier this week.
In a message released on the day, Bolsonaro said he hopes that the peace and prosperity of Japan will continue in the country's new era of Reiwa, which started on Wednesday, when Emperor Naruhito assumed the throne.
The Brazilian leader also said that he wants the two countries' traditional friendship and partnership to deepen further.
Brazil, where some two million people with Japanese descent reside, is known for its pro-Japanese stance.
Emperor Naruhito has visited Brazil three times. He delivered a speech at the World Water Forum held in Brasilia, the capital of the South American country, in March 2018, the year that marked the 110th anniversary of the arrival of first Japanese immigrants in Brazil. Jiji Press
