Cabinet adopts ordinance to enforce civil code April 2020
December 15, 2017
TOKYO- The Japanese cabinet adopted Friday an ordinance to enforce the revised Civil Code featuring major amendments to clauses related to claims and contracts on April 1, 2020.
The claims-related sections underwent the first drastic change since the Civil Code was established in 1896.
The amendments "will broadly affect people's daily lives and companies' economic activities," Justice Minister Yoko Kamikawa told a press conference. "We'll work on more effectively informing the public of the changes so that the revised code will be enforced appropriately."
The revised Civil Code, enacted in May, sets new rules for clarifying the terms and conditions of commercial services indicated to a large indefinite number of customers when contracts are concluded. Clauses of contracts that unilaterally harm the interests of consumers will be invalidated. Jiji Press
