Ceramics whose cracks “heal” quickly developed
December 29, 2017
Tokyo- A Japanese team has developed ceramics with a self-healing ability to fix cracks in the substance quickly in high-temperature environments.
The ceramics would help improve the fuel efficiency of aircraft engines significantly if the substance is confirmed usable for turbine blades.
Ceramic blades would be lighter than conventional blades made from a nickel-based alloy and other substances. But ceramics are vulnerable to impacts, including from stones and metal fragments.
The new ceramics are likely to provide a solution to the problem, according to the team of researchers at the National Institute for Materials Science and Yokohama National University. Jiji Press
