Civil servants’ FY 2017 bonuses seen up slightly
August 3, 2017
TOKYO- Japan's National Personnel Authority is expected to recommend that national civil servants in the country receive bonuses equivalent to 4.35-4.4 months' salary in fiscal 2017, up 0.05-0.1 month from the previous year, Jiji Press learned Wednesday.
The authority is also considering calling for an increase of between 600 yen and below 700 yen in monthly salary for government employees for the year, informed sources said.
The government agency will thus recommend hikes in both bonuses and monthly pay for the fourth consecutive year. The authority is expected to make its fiscal 2017 pay recommendations to the cabinet and the Diet, the country's parliament, on or around Tuesday, the sources said.
The authority proposes pay levels for public servants based on its survey on private-sector pay.
Its fiscal 2017 bonus recommendations will be based on a survey covering 2016 winter and 2017 summer bonuses in the private sector. The survey is expected to show that bonus levels at private companies are slightly higher than those for government employees, according to the sources.
In fiscal 2016, government employees received bonuses equivalent to 4.3 months' salary. Jiji Press
