Developing parking lots for Tokyo Games a race against time

July 24, 2017

TOKYO- The postponement of the relocation of Tokyo's iconic Tsukiji wholesale food market has also put a damper on infrastructure development for the 2020 Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games.
For the 2020 Games, parking lots and roads are set to be constructed on the site of the Tsukiji market in Chuo Ward, to be transferred to the Toyosu district in neighboring Koto Ward.
The schedule for the project is "extremely tight," an official involved in the quadrennial events said, now that Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike has made a decision to push forward the stalled market relocation plan.
The Tokyo metropolitan government estimates a 30-hectare site to park 2,000 buses and 4,000 passenger cars will be required for the quadrennial sporting events.
It has decided to use the site of the Tsukiji market, which covers a 23-hectare area in the heart of the Japanese capital, as a transport hub, with parking lots as well as resting space for drivers.
According to the metropolitan government, it will take about a year to develop parking lots there after razing the aging market.
Despite Koike's decision, it is uncertain when the Tsukiji market will be relocated.
"We have a fixed goal" of hosting the 2020 Games, said an official at the metropolitan government's Bureau of Olympic and Paralympic Games Tokyo 2020 Preparation. "We must make preparations so as not to pose obstacles to the operation (of the events)." (Jiji Press)
