Diet to meet as early as Monday to discuss Kake favoritism
July 18, 2017
TOKYO- The ruling Liberal Democratic Party and the main opposition Democratic Party agreed Tuesday that the Diet, Japan's parliament, will meet as early as Monday with the presence of Prime Minister Shinzo Abe to discuss alleged favoritism toward a school operator headed by a friend of Abe.
The opposition camp has been demanding that the budget committees of both Diet chambers hold off-session meetings to discuss the allegations that the school operator, Kake Educational Institution, received favorable government treatment.
At Tuesday's talks, Wataru Takeshita, chairman of the LDP's Diet Affairs Committee, stopped short of clarifying whether to accept the DP's demand to summon Hiroto Izumi, special adviser to the prime minister, and others to speak at the off-session meetings. (Jiji Press)
