Draft calls for making renewable energy key power source
March 31, 2018
Tokyo- The industry ministry on Friday presented a basic draft of long-term energy strategy proposals that calls for making renewable energy a key power source for Japan.
Japan should move toward decarbonization in line with the Paris agreement to fight climate change that took effect in 2016, said the draft, which will be used to work out planned government strategies to 2050.
The draft, submitted at a meeting of a ministry panel of experts, proposed that the country make renewable energy "an independent main power source" by utilizing electricity-storage, hydrogen-related and digital technologies.
Nuclear power will be "an option" needed to realize decarbonization of the country's energy, the draft said, urging the government to continue efforts to develop safer, more economical and more flexible reactors. Jiji Press
