Emperor’s Throne Transferred to Tokyo’s Imperial Palace

Tokyo- The "Takamikura" throne to be used in a ceremony in October next year for the proclamation of Japanese Crown Prince Naruhito's enthronement to succeed Emperor Akihito arrived in Tokyo's Imperial Palace on Wednesday.

"Michodai," a similar structure that will be used in the ceremony by Crown Princess Masako, who is set to become the new empress, was also transferred to the Imperial Palace.

Takamikura and Michodai, transported from the Kyoto Imperial Palace by two convoys of four trucks each after being disassembled, will be used in the "Sokuirei Seiden no Gi" ceremony set to take place on Oct. 22, 2019, at Tokyo's Imperial Palace.

According to the Imperial Household Agency, Takamikura and Michodai were disassembled into a total of some 3,000 parts and they were packed in a total of some 250 corrugated boxes.

The agency plans to start reassembling work around mid-September next year after lacquering and repairing some parts by the end of the current fiscal year through March 2019.

Takamikura, which is 6.48 meters high and weighs some 8 tons, is the place where the new emperor proclaims his enthronement. Michodai is 5.67 meters high and weighs about 7 tons.

Emperor Akihito is set to abdicate on April 30 next year and Crown Prince Naruhito is scheduled to accede to the Imperial throne the following day. Jiji Press
