EXCLUSIVE: 2020 Olympic Golf Course Accepts Full Female Members
May 11, 2018
Tokyo- A golf course to be used in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics has given full membership to three women, informed sources told Jiji Press on Thursday.
This is the first time for Kasumigaseki Country Club to have women as full members since it changed its rule that had limited full membership to men in March last year, the sources said.
The board of the operator of the golf course in the city of Kawagoe, Saitama Prefecture, north of Tokyo, approved full membership for the three women, who were previously weekday members, the sources said.
The golf course had been under fire for refusing to let women become full members although it was selected as the 2020 Olympic golf venue.
In January last year, Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike criticized the golf course for discriminatiing against women.
The International Olympic Committee asked the operator to change the practice, which violated the principle of gender equality cited in the Olympic Charter. Jiji Press
