June 10, 2018
Narita, Chiba Pref.- Automatic immigration gates with face recognition systems were unveiled to the press at Narita International Airport on Friday before they enter into full operation for the first time in Japan on Monday.
The unmanned gates will automate passport control for Japanese passengers. Face images will be taken in front of the gates and compared with passport data for identity confirmation.
A total of 31 units will be installed at the airport's three terminals within this month. The gates will be introduced also at Tokyo International Airport at Haneda, Chubu Centrair International Airport near Nagoya, Kansai International Airport in Osaka Prefecture and Fukuoka Airport.
The automatic face recognition gates have been tested at the Haneda airport since last October. Jiji Press
