Farm, Forestry, Fishery Damage from Japan Rain Swells to 43.6 B. Yen

Tokyo- The amount of damage on the agriculture, forestry and fisheries industries from recent record rain and subsequent floods and mudslides mainly in western Japan totaled 43.69 billion yen as of Sunday morning, the agriculture ministry said.
The figure was up sharply from 29.05 billion yen as of Saturday morning.
Of the latest total, damage to farm products, including vegetables and fruits, stood at 1.8 billion yen, and damage to farmland and farming facilities, such as farm roads and reservoirs, came to 8.13 billion yen and 12.46 billion yen, respectively.
Damage came to 11.91 billion yen for forests, 7.35 billion yen for forest roads and 780 million yen for ports.
The level of damage has yet to be confirmed in many seriously affected areas where access is difficult, according to the ministry.
Although more than a week has passed since the rain, it remains to be seen how far the damage amount will expand, a ministry official said. Jiji Press
