Faulty Takata air bag likely caused 12th death in US

July 11, 2017

NEW YORK- A fatal incident that occurred during repair work on a Honda Motor Co.  vehicle in Florida in June last year was likely due to the rupture of a driver's air bag inflator made by Takata Corp. , Honda said Monday.
This marked the 12th fatality in connection with a faulty Takata air bag in the United States.
The rupture occurred on June 18, 2016, when an individual was working to repair a 2001 Honda Accord inside the vehicle using a hammer at a private residence in Hialeah in the southern US state while the ignition switch was in the "on" position, according to the major Japanese automaker.
The person, who was not the owner of the car, suffered injuries from the rupture and died the following day, the company said.
Honda thinks that the fatality was related to the rupture of the air bag inflator although the absolute cause of the death "may never be fully determined," the company said, noting that it is difficult to determine whether the death was caused by the inflator rupture or an interaction of the hammer with the deploying air bag.
Honda sent 12 recall notices to registered owners of the vehicle over the course of nearly seven years prior to the incident. Multiple such notices were sent to its owner at the time of the incident, but the car did not undergo repairs, according to Honda. (Jiji Press)
